Po Lin Monastery and Tian Tan Buddha

Located at an altitude of 450 meters on the Ngong Ping Plateau, the monastery opened in 1970 and is not a historical site. It has an elaborately decorated roof, the main hall has two floors and hosts three big golden Buddha statues. Dragons and many Chinese mythical figures look down from the vermilion painted interiors. It also has a vegetarian restaurant that serve excellent food at a very moderate prices for a fabulous little lunch.

The main attraction of Po Lin is the giant Buddha statue also known as Tian Tan Buddha, located outside the monastery. It is 34 meters high and weighs about 250 tons. But its worth the effort to climb 268 steps to reach the statue, to enjoy a wonderful view of the nearby little islands and the blue South China Sea. There is also a small winding road to the Buddha, for vehicles for the handicapped.
